Current Practice

When children are conceived, parents and family members begin to imagine the life the child is going to live. Sometimes that life does not look like what was imagined due to medical or developmental diagnosis, trauma, abuse, and/or loss.

Sonya is passionate about helping children and families navigate the resulting behavioral, emotional, and social challenges from a strengths-based perspective. She has worked with families from infancy in the Early Intervention Program as well as through preschool aged children in both home and school settings. Sonya has experience working with all ages of clients diagnosed with developmental disabilities such as autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, and other IDD. She offers a unique perspective to parents and siblings of youth with disabilities, as she has walked with many families through the process. This process entails helping families with their initial evaluations, setting up in-home and school-based services, navigating medical appointments and community outings, and assisting with post-secondary transitions through adulthood.

In addition to working with youth and families of those with disabilities, Sonya is also passionate about working with typically developing children and youth who need help with social emotional regulation, or are having difficulty with school or relationships with peers or adults. Her experience as a volleyball coach and substitute teacher has also provided insight into working with adolescents and teenagers who are navigating anxiety, depression, and/or experienced life stressors and other traumatic events. She knows that sometimes this age simply needs to speak with an understanding and compassionate adult.

Sonya is currently pursuing her Masters of Social Work as an Intern Therapist from Grand Canyon University, under the Supervision of Emilia Ealom, LCSW. She sees clients in Aurora, CO, as well as telehealth appointments for Colorado residents.
